A Historical Gem, Reimagined for Tea Lovers

In October 2012, smith&hsu unveiled its sixth and largest flagship teahouse on Hengyang Road in Taipei. Housed in a beautiful old building, this three-story tea haven seats 109 guests and offers the full smith&hsu tea collection. Our mission is to unite the world's greatest tea cultures and rejuvenate the art of tea drinking in a contemporary setting.

A Blend of History and Modernity

Hengyang Road, one of Taipei's most picturesque historical districts, is known for its eclectic architecture dating back to the Japanese colonial era in the early 20th century. Once Taipei’s bustling commercial hub, the area still retains many of its original architectural features. This rich history inspired Swiss-Danish designer Carsten Jörgensen to create a teahouse that marries heritage with innovation.

Preserving the Past, Embracing the Future

Jörgensen’s design maintains the building’s historical façade and interior elements while seamlessly integrating smith&hsu’s modern brand philosophy. The spacious patio features an old stone wall, untouched except for the addition of transparent glass shelves at the base. This wall, adorned with randomly growing plants, rises to a glass roof, becoming the patio's focal point, especially when bathed in sunlight.

“The wall symbolizes the building's life and the passage of time, evoking a sense of inner peace that aligns with smith&hsu’s serene atmosphere,” explains Jörgensen. “Innovation for us means building on our collective inheritance, not forgetting history. By incorporating the existing architectural elements into our design, we honor the past while paving the way for new inspirations.”

A Sanctuary of Elegance and Simplicity

Throughout the teahouse, steel beams, columns, and unpainted walls are intentionally exposed, showcasing the building's original construction. The use of natural materials and minimal aesthetics echoes smith&hsu's signature style. Concrete floors, white walls, a solid marble counter, and simple cubic wooden furniture create a sophisticated yet understated atmosphere. Classic Y-chairs and Eames Side Chairs add a touch of elegance and comfort.

An Artistic Tea Experience

The third floor combines the tea experience with the appreciation of art, reflecting smith&hsu’s belief that the wisdom in creating art forms the intellectual foundation for a contemporary tea culture. The unique design invites guests to immerse themselves in a space where history and modernity coexist harmoniously.

A Tribute to Hengyang Road

smith&hsu @ Hengyang Road is more than just a teahouse; it’s a journey through time. By integrating modern design with historical elements, we create a space that honors the past while embracing the future. Come and experience this harmonious blend of old and new, where every corner tells a story and every sip of tea is a moment to savor.
